Invariant Bayesian Estimation on Manifolds

چکیده

A frequent and well-founded criticism of the maximum a posteriori (MAP) and minimum mean squared error (MMSE) estimates of a continuous parameter γ taking values in a differentiable manifold Γ is that they are not invariant to arbitrary ‘reparametrizations’ of Γ. This paper clarifies the issues surrounding this problem, by pointing out the difference between coordinate invariance, which is a sine qua non for a mathematically well-defined problem, and diffeomorphism invariance, which is a substantial issue, and then provides a solution. We first show that the presence of a metric structure on Γ can be used to define coordinate-invariant MAP and MMSE estimates, and we argue that this is the natural way to proceed. We then discuss the choice of a metric structure on Γ. By imposing an invariance criterion natural within a Bayesian framework, we show that this choice is essentially unique. It does not necessarily correspond to a choice of coordinates. In cases of complete prior ignorance, when Jeffreys’ prior is used, the invariant MAP estimate reduces to the maximum likelihood estimate. The invariant MAP estimate coincides with the minimum message length (MML) estimate, but no discretization or approximation is used in its derivation.

Statistical cosymplectic manifolds and their submanifolds

In ‎this ‎paper‎, we introduce statistical cosymplectic manifolds and investigate some properties of their tensors. We define invariant and anti-invariant submanifolds and study invariant submanifolds with normal and tangent structure vector fields. We prove that an invariant submanifold of a statistical cosymplectic manifold with tangent structure vector field is a cosymplectic and minimal...

Spectral Criterion of Stochastic Stability for Invariant Manifolds

SPECTRAL CRITERION OF STOCHASTIC STABILITY FOR INVARIANT MANIFOLDS 1 L. B. Ryashko a† and I. A. Bashkirtseva a‡ UDC 531.36 Abstract. The mean square stability for invariant manifolds of nonlinear stochastic differential equations is considered. The stochastic stability analysis is reduced to the estimation of the spectral radius of some positive operator. For the important case of manifolds wit...

A Parameterization Invariant Approach to the Statistical Estimation of the CKM Phase α

In contrast to previous analyses, we demonstrate a Bayesian approach to the estimation of the CKM phase α that is invariant to parameterization. We also show that in addition to computing the marginal posterior in a Bayesian manner, the distribution must also be interpreted from a subjective Bayesian viewpoint. Doing so gives a very natural interpretation to the distribution. We also comment on...
